What is Biofeedback?

BIOFEEDBACK
is a clinical process for changing one or more physiological functions including, but not limited to relaxation, increasing muscle flexibility, increasing blood flow, decreasing blood pressure, lowering heart rate, increasing blood oxygenation, lowering stress levels and pain reduction using approved biofeedback devices.

The term ‘biofeedback’ comes from the Greek prefix, ‘bio’ meaning ‘life’, and ‘feedback’ meaning ‘comment’ or ‘response’. Essentially, biofeedback enables you to receive information from your body on current behavior, and influence or modify future behavior. With biofeedback, you can learn to control bodily functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, headache, pain, and muscle tension. The advantages are obvious: non-invasive, non-drug therapy, and preventative value.

Today’s biofeedback can be either extremely advanced or something you might use every day. If you think you have a fever and take your temperature using a thermometer; that is biofeedback. When you step on a scale and it tells you how much weight you have gained or lost, you are experiencing biofeedback.
