Stress is defined as the ‘non-specific response of the body to any demand’ – in other words, it is simply our body’s reaction to something.  Not all stress is bad. Sometimes a little bit of stress can be motivating and energizing. As individuals, we all deal with stress differently and we all have different levels of stress tolerance. To maintain good health it is necessary to identify and focus on avoiding the ‘bad stress’ – those things to which we react badly – otherwise known as ‘stressors’.

According to world-renowned endocrinologist and leading stress researcher Hans Seyle, the body has three reaction phases when dealing with stressors, Alarm, Adaptation, and Exhaustion (see Flow of Disease).  Stress has been linked to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, premature aging and has been identified as the leading cause of death in North America.

Stress results from a string of specific events, the general conditions of your life, lifecycle transitions and development stages or conflicts with your belief system.  Some examples include your relationships, your emotional state, your job, your social situation, death or loss of a loved one, reaching puberty etc.

Acute Stress

When you are faced with an immediate threat or stressful situation, such as avoiding an accident or having an argument, your body responds to that threat by releasing chemicals that make it tense, alert and ready for action.  This is known as the ‘stress response’ or ‘fight-or-flight’ response.

Your body remains in this state until your mind tells you that the situation has passed.  The body then stops producing the chemicals that caused the physical reaction and you gradually return to normal.  The chemical takes 30-60 minutes to leave the system, so if you become stressed again in a short period your body will not fully recover.

Acute stress can cause problems when the body does not fully recover such as tension, feeling irritable, and being unable to concentrate.  It’s important to recognize these signals and allow the body time to recover and return to normal.

Chronic Stress

Chronic Stress can be the result of many instances of ‘Acute Stress’ or a life condition, such as a job or financial situation.  In people with higher levels of chronic stress, the stress response stays on longer, contributing to their physical stress and imbalances.

Over time, Chronic Stress can affect the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, and the immune system. For example, this ongoing stress can lead to high blood pressure and make you susceptible to infection and cause many ‘dis-eases’, such as depression, heart disease, asthma to name a few.

It’s important to listen, recognize and understand the ‘message from your body’ so you can reduce and relieve stressors as they arise. At Quantum Energy Health Centres, and Feel Right Health Centres, we provide a wide range of proven, non-invasive technologies and services to help you recognize and control your stressors.
